World No. 57 Fabio Fognini reached his first ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season on Thursday as he upset fifth seed, Marcos Baghdatis, 7-5, 7-6(4) at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest. The Italian recovered from a break down in both sets to claim victory in just under two hours.
The No. 41-ranked Baghdatis was making his 2012 clay-court debut and dropped to a 15-9 match record on the season. Fognini had won just two matches all season coming into this ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament. The 24 year old also reached the last eight in Bucharest in 2009, falling to Albert Montanes.
Fognini goes onto face countryman and sixth seed Andreas Seppi, who cruised past Germany’s Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-2, 6-3 in 71 minutes. The 28-year-old Seppi will contest his third ATP World Tour quarter-final of the year.
World No. 130 Matthias Bachinger overcame a gap of 90 places in the South African Airways ATP Rankings to defeat Viktor Troicki 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2). Both players broke serve five times, but it was the German who won four points more than his fourth-seeded Serbian opponent as he prevailed in the decisive tie-break after two hours and 30 minutes.
Seventh seed Lukasz Kubot advanced to his second quarter-final of the year as he cruised past Romanian wild card Marius Copil 6-3, 6-3 in 76 minutes. The Pole evened up his season record at 10-10.
