Stuttgart

Singles – First Round: (6) Caroline Wozniacki def. Jelena Jankovic 6-3 1-0, retired (back)
Retirements were to be the theme of the day. In Jelena Jankovic’s case, that means she stays stuck at #17.

Singles – First Round: (LL) Akgul Amanmuradova def. Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 5-7 6-3
That’s killing two Slovaks with one stone. Dominika Cibulkova was supposed to open against Daniela Hantuchova. But Hantuchova pulled out (meaning that she will not rise above #18), and then Akgul Amanmuradova did this — an absolutely stunning result on clay. Dominika Cibulkova loses her Top Fifteen chance; Amanmuradova is close to making the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: (WC) Mona Barthel def. Ana Ivanovic 7-5 7-6(7-4)
At any other event, Mona Barthel would have had direct entry. So this isn’t a huge surprise. But it means no upward move for Ana Ivanovic. Barthel is still at #35, but if she can win her next match (against Marion Bartoli), she will rise to around #32.

Singles – Second Round: (2) Maria Sharapova def. (Q) Alize Cornet 6-3 1-0, retired (right shoulder)
Maria Sharapova finally has enough events that she has a sixteenth event score. In other words, this doesn’t yet count for her. Anything else would count. She can’t move this week, though.
Ironic to see her win because someone else’s shoulder acted up….

Singles – Second Round: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (Q) Greta Arn 6-3 6-4
Agnieszka Radwanska cannot climb above #4 this week, but a good showing here would give her a real shot at Rome or Madrid.

Doubles – First Round: Goerges/Groenefeld def. (3) Peng/Vesnina 7-6(7-2) 6-1
Not a very good start to the post-Mirza/Vesnina era, is it? Mirza/Pennetta withdrew; Peng/Vesnina lost.

Doubles – First Round: Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova def. (WC) Kerber/Petkovic 6-4 7-5

Fes

Singles – Second Round: (1) Anabel Medina Garrigues def. Mandy Minella 6-2 6-3
One more win would allow Anabel Medina Garrigues to stay Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: Irina-Camelia Begu def. (2) Svetlana Kuznetsova 1-6 7-6(7-4) 3-2 retired (leg)
Irina-Camelia Begu is a good player, and Svetlana Kuznetsova was perhaps tired after Fed Cup, but it still proved to be a bad day for retirements here. Kuznetsova loses her chance to return to the Top 25; Begu is getting close to the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: (3) Petra Cetkovska def. Timea Bacsinszky 6-3 6-2
There is no question now; Petra Cetkovska will stay Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: (5) Simona Halep def. Alexandra Cadantu 6-2 7-5
Simona Halep hasn’t clinched a Top Fifty spot yet, but one more win would do it, and clearly anything can happen in this draw!

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Kiki Bertens def. (6) Chanelle Scheepers 7-5 1-6 6-3
Her previous win didn’t do Kiki Bertens much good, but this is more substantial; she will probably rise to around #130. Chanelle Scheepers loses her Top Forty chance.

Singles – Second Round: (LL) Mathilde Johansson def. (8) Shahar Peer 4-6 6-3 6-2
Shahar Peer spent more than five hours on court in her two matches; little wonder she ran out of gas. But she loses her Top Fifty chance. Mathilde Johansson is close to the Top Hundred.

Singles – Second Round: Laura Pous-Tio def. Arantxa Rus 6-3 7-5
Laura Pous-Tio has semifinalist points to defend, so she still needs one more win just to stay in place. Two more would put her in the Top Hundred.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Garbine Muguruza Blanco def. Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-4 retired
As we said, a tough day for retirements. But it takes Garbine Muguruza Blanco to around #120.

Doubles – First Round: Pliskova/Pliskova def. (1) Rodionova/Rodionova 2-0 retired (Arina Rodionova: Left Wrist Injury)

Doubles – First Round: Rus/Bertens def. Arruabarrena-Vecino/Ivanova 6-2 6-2
This is really looking as if it will be the biggest week of Kiki Bertens’s career. She wasn’t even supposed to be in the draw, but #2 seeds Daniilidou/Zakopalova pulled out.

Doubles – First Round: Cetkovska/Panova def. (WC) El Allami/Lalami 6-3 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Begu/Cadantu def. Bacsinszky/Brianti 6-0 1-6 10-5 (Match TB)
