Greetings from Fifth Ave! Wow what a day. We had the warmest weather. Almost 88 today! Here I was wishing I was in Monte Carlo but looks like the spectators are freezing ..ok. I still wish I was in Monaco!
O.K. Back to the Big Apple … Why would NYC be called the Big Apple anyway? Any readers know?
There’s a play running off Broadway called “Federer versus Murray” …. There’s a play running on Broadway about Magic Johnson and Larry Bird … That play is about Magic and Larry and their rivalries. The Federer / Murray play is about a couple dealing with a family tragedy and they immerse themselves in the tennis viewing… We here at 10sballs.com love it when tennis crosses over to mainstream. Big congrats for the efforts.
Thanks to Tennis Channel we caught Donald Young’s match against wildcard Paul-Henri Mathieu. Don’t forget before his year off with a knee injury J-H. was as high as 12 in the world. The scores were a bit of a shocker. 6-0,6-1. The match lasted one hour and seven minutes. It took almost 49 minutes before D. Y. Won a game…. yikes! Donald was the only American in the draw. What a pity. A long way to travel to get womped.
Thanks to the Tennis Channel we observed a few things. One Donald didn’t play poorly. Two. He fought hard and never gave up. Three. Ready. He looked Jet-lagged!!!! Very. Knowing him he rarely arrives with enough days to transition into the new routine … It’s a difficult thing to figure… When should I arrive? To me it’s simple. As early as possible. Due to a multitude if things that’s easier said than done. But D.Y. looked like he was missing his “oomph “… like his shots weren’t punishing ….
Donald had good first serve percentages at 62 percent. One ace for a lefty? He seemed like he was sucking up air after long exchanges. I say jet lag.
Many of players and coaches have theories and formulas that they follow to prevent jet lag. We have all felt it. Travel thru time zones. Long flights. Long delays. It’s day when you are used to it being night and vice versa.
It’s night and day. As Cole Porter might say. Cole would have loved this tennis golden age. He would write a new sonnet or two about Federer. For “youre the top ” Maybe even a Novak one?
Novak. He must be having a blast. He always looks like he is having a blast. Flying around the world in a friends 737. Way to go. This week he is “home ” in Monte Carlo. I remember a reporter once asked Richard Krajicek why he liked living in Monte Carlo? His answer ” I like the weather”…
Novaks clothing sponsor Sergio Tachinni is also the official clothing for the Ballkids. And has a booth in the events beautiful ” boothland “.
Back to jet-lag. I’m jetlagged. It makes me grumpy. Imagine how these players function in almost a constant state of jet lag. Just when they start to feel ” good” it’s time to move on. I’ll cover jet lag more. It’s all about the little things at the world class level. The nuances.
Any readers know why New York City is called the ” Big Apple ” ?
