Casablanca
Singles – Second Round: (3) P Andujar def. P Starace 6-3 6-0
This was, of course, one of two matches rained out the day before. Looks like Pablo Andujar wanted to make up for lost time!
Singles – Second Round: (Q) S Gutierrez-Ferrol def. (Q) L Ouahab 6-4 6-1
Lamine Ouahab came in at #752, so just making the second round increases his points by more than 150%. He should rise to around #550.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) P Andujar def. (Q) S Gutierrez-Ferrol 6-4 1-6 6-3
Here, obviously, is Andujar again. He’s getting close to a return to the Top Fifty — but, of course, he’s going to be very tired after this.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (7) A Ramos def. J Chardy 6-3 6-4
Albert Ramos can expect to reach a career high well above #50.
Singles – Quarterfinal: I Andreev def. G Garcia-Lopez 6-4 6-2
Igor Andreev is the lower-ranked of these struggling players, but he also likes clay a lot better, so this isn’t too surprising.
Singles – Quarterfinal: F Cipolla def. B Paire 6-3 6-4
Benoit Paire should reach the Top Hundred, but perhaps not by much.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Brown/Hanley def. Dolgopolov/Jaziri 6-3 6-4
Doubles – Semifinal: Brown/Hanley def. (3) Marrero/Melo 6-6(9-11) 7-6(9-7) 13-11 (Match TB)
A long day for Brown/Hanley, but (despite the rankings) we’d consider them strong candidates to win the title if they have anything left.
Doubles – Semifinal: (4) Bracciali/Fognini def. Haase/Rojer 5-7 6-4 11-9 (Match TB)
Houston
Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) J Isner def. R Sweeting 7-6(7-1) 7-6(7-4)
And so Ryan Sweeting’s winning streak here is finally at an end. That means he will stay stuck well below the Top Hundred. But John Isner now needs only one more win to become the #1 American player.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) (WC) F Lopez def. (6) C Berlocq 6-4 2-2 retired (Left Calf)
Carlos Berlocq is having the best year of his career, so perhaps it’s no surprise that it took a toll. But it’s sad that it had to happen as he went into what is presumably his favorite time of the year. If we did everything right (and this is a complicated week, so it’s hard to be sure), he will remain at #37.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) J Monaco def. (5) K Anderson (WC) 7-6(7-4) 7-5
Another step toward the Top Fifteen for Juan Monaco, but Kevin Anderson will remain near the bottom of the Top Thirty.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (Q) M Russell def. R Harrison 6-1 5-7 6-3
What a week for Michael Russell — two semifinals, one in singles, one in doubles. This will slow Ryan Harrison’s Top Fifty bid, although he is still on track to make it this year.
Doubles – Semifinal Blake/Querrey def. Karlovic/Moser 3-6 6-3 10-8 (Match TB)
Doubles – Semifinal Huey/Inglot def. (WC) Reynolds/Russell 6-3 3-6 10-6 (Match TB)
An amazing week for Michael Russell despite the loss. Pretty amazing for Dominic Inglot, too, who came in at #193 and has increased his points by about 40%.
