Casablanca

There was rain in Morocco, meaning that two singles matches (Starace vs. Andujar and Ouahab vs. Gutierrez-Ferrol) were rained out. It could be a long Friday….

Singles – Second Round: J Chardy def. (1) F Mayer 6-3 6-1

Next year, the top seeds here may request that the not be given first round byes. They needed the clay practice. Florian Mayer became the sixth seed eliminated. It appears that means he will stay at #20.

Singles – Second Round: (7) A Ramos def. V Hanescu 6-2 6-4

Albert Ramos is the only seed in the top half, so he has a very good shot at the Top Fifty this week.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Haase/Rojer def. (2) Butorac/Soares 7-5 6-0

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Marrero/Melo def. Elgin/Istomin 6-3 6-2

Houston

Singles – Second Round: (Q) M Russell def. (1) M Fish 6-3 6-1

Mardy Fish was too weak to play Davis Cup last week. It’s clear that he still isn’t over it, either. That left Fish waiting to see how John Isner would do to know if he could stay #9.

Singles – Second Round: (2) J Isner def. (Q) H Zeballos 6-7(3-7) 6-4 6-2

Maybe John Isner should start petitioning that they play best-of-seven matches. Or best of nine. He seems to love marathons. We show him two wins away from becoming the #1 American.

Singles – Second Round: (4) J Monaco (WC) def. T Ito 6-3 6-3

No move yet for Juan Monaco, but he’s in fine form, and he likes the surface, and a final could put him in the Top Fifteen.

Singles – Second Round: (5) K Anderson (WC) def. S Querrey 7-6(7-3) 3-6 7-6(7-2)

This can’t have been much fun for these clay-haters. Especially for Sam Querrey, considering that he won more than half the points! Kevin Anderson will get to count any additional points he earns; he appears to be bound for the Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: Ryan Sweeting def. Bobby Reynolds 6-3 6-2

Ryan Sweeting just keeps winning here. This won’t put him back in the Top Hundred — it appears he will need another title for that — but at least he is shedding his slump.

Singles – Second Round: R Harrison def. I Kunitsyn 6-2 6-4

If Ryan Harrison can do this well on clay, what will he do come hardcourts? He isn’t Top Fifty yet, but it’s starting to look as if it could happen.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Blake/Querrey def. (1) Bogomolov/Lipsky 6-3 6-3

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Huey/Inglot def. (2) Knowles/Malisse 3-6 6-4 10-8 (Match TB)

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Karlovic/Moser def. (3) Kohlmann/Waske 7-5 7-5

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Reynolds/Russell def. (4) Brunstrom/Norman 6-3 6-2

What a wild day — all four seeded pairs out in one session! Largely to players who have been eliminated in the singles, too, including two who had lost earlier in the day. Although Michael Russell is still around in both singles and doubles.
