Barcelona
Singles – First Round: Sorana Cirstea def. (8) Polona Hercog 6-4 retired (Dizziness)
No sooner did Polona Hercog seem to be coming out of her slump than she got sick…. This costs her her chance to rise above #35.
Singles – Second Round: Simona Halep def. (4) Roberta Vinci 6-1 6-3
Simona Halep continues to climb the rankings; one more win might put her in the Top Forty. Roberta Vinci was the defending champion, but the points don’t come off this week, so her total isn’t affected. Still, she will not rise above #18; she might fall.
Singles – Second Round: Carla Suarez Navarro def. (6) Petra Cetkovska 6-2 6-4
Petra Cetkovska will certainly fall; this drops her from #28 to probably #29.
Singles – Second Round: (7) Sara Errani def. (LL) Estrella Cabeza Candela 6-0 6-2
Sara Errani being Sara Errani, this isn’t enough points to count. Her next win will count.
Doubles – First Round: Peer/Suarez def. (3) Govortsova/Uhlirova 6-2 2-6 10-8 (Match TB)
No doubt a lot of players are wishing Paola Suarez would get her ranking up high enough to be seeded….
Doubles – First Round: Cetkovska/Zahlavova Strycova def. (4) Bratchikova/Jurak 6-1 6-2
All in all, a crummy day for seeds.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Begu/Dominguez Lino def. Jugic-Salkic/Klemenschits 6-3 6-3
Copenhagen
Singles – First Round: (3) Jelena Jankovic def. Laura Robson 6-4 7-6(10-8)
This was, if anything, tougher than the score — which isn’t good news for Jelena Jankovic, considering that she needs two more wins to do herself any good at all.
Singles – First Round: Bojana Jovanovski def. Stefanie Voegele 6-3 6-4
Bojana Jovanovski has been having a miserable year. This won’t help much, but perhaps it’s a start.
Singles – Second Round: (5) Kaia Kanepi def. Timea Babos 7-5 4-6 7-6(7-2)
Kaia Kanepi is now up to around #32.
Singles – Second Round: (6) Mona Barthel def. Alberta Brianti 6-3 6-2
This might take Mona Barthel as high as #35.
Singles – Second Round: Petra Martic def. (Q) Johanna Konta 6-2 6-3
You’ll recall that Johanna Konta faced an unhealthy opponent in the first round, and probably didn’t deserve to be here; it’s no surprise that she couldn’t really compete. This might take Petra Martic as high as #55.
Singles – Second Round: Alize Cornet def. Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-2 2-6 7-5
Patricia Mayr-Achleitner would have clinched a return to the Top Hundred had she won this. As it is, it will be close.
Doubles – First Round: (3) Date-Krumm/Fujiwara def. Kerber/Radwanska 2-6 6-3 10-8 (Match TB)
Doubles – First Round: (4) Barrois/Brianti def. (WC) Barbat/Grage 6-3 6-3
Doubles – First Round: Foretz Gacon/Malek def. Kichenok/Kichenok 4-6 6-1 10-4 (Match TB)
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Rodionova/Rodionova def. Larsson/Woehr 7-6(7-4) 6-4
