Singles – Second Round: F Cipolla def. (2) A Dolgopolov (WC) 6-4 6-1
This has not been a fun event for seeds. We’ve lost five so far, and all four of the players to reach the quarterfinal are unseeded. This appears to cost Alexandr Dolgopolov his Top Twenty chance.
Singles – Second Round: I Andreev def. (4) D Istomin 6-7(3-7) 6-3 6-2
It’s worth remembering that the top four seeds here had byes. So this was Denis Istomin’s first clay match of the season. Still a substantial surprise, and it costs him his Top Forty chance.
Singles – Second Round: G Garcia-Lopez def. P Mathieu 6-4 6-2
Obviously Paul-Henri Mathieu still has work to do, but just winning his first round match should take him to around #360.
Singles – Second Round: B Paire def. M Bachinger 6-7(3-7) 6-3 6-2
Not much doubt now that Benoit Paire will be hitting the Top Hundred.
Doubles – First Round: (2) Butorac/Soares def. Bachinger/F Mayer 6-1 6-2
Doubles – First Round: (3) Marrero/Melo def. Kas/Knowle 6-7(4-7) 7-6(7-5) 10-1 (Match TB)
Julian Knowle should perhaps think about playing some Challengers. He needs to get his ranking up high enough that he doesn’t face so many seeds in early rounds….
Doubles – First Round: Elgin/Istomin def. (WC) Saber/Ziadi 6-4 6-0
Doubles – First Round: Haase/Rojer def. (WC) Fattar/Rachidi 6-1 6-2
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Bracciali/Fognini def. Marray/J Murray 6-4 6-4
Houston
Singles – First Round: (5) K Anderson (WC) def. J Souza 6-3 6-4
Kevin Anderson needs two more wins to earn enough to count toward his point total, but because so many players above him are losing Monte Carlo points, he appears certain to rise no matter what he does this week.
Singles – First Round: R Harrison def. (7) A Bogomolov Jr. 4-6 6-3 6-4
Maybe Alex Bogomolov Jr. should have stayed an American. He certainly hasn’t accomplished much since “defecting.” He will remain stuck around #40.
Singles – First Round: B Reynolds def. (8) I Karlovic 7-6(7-5) 2-6 6-3
No return to the Top Fifty for Ivo Karlovic, it seems.
Singles – Second Round: (3) (WC) F Lopez def. P Lorenzi 6-4 7-6(7-4)
One report claimed that Feliciano Lopez “overpowered” Paolo Lorenzi in this match. Given that Lopez trailed in the first set, and was constantly playing catch-up in the second, “overpowered” seems a bit strong. But he came through, helped by four aces in the tiebreak. Unfortunately for him, he needs a final to earn any points.
Singles – Second Round: (6) C Berlocq def. B Phau 6-1 6-0
One more win would probably take Carlos Berlocq to #35.
Doubles – First Round: (2) Knowles/Malisse def. Emmrich/Siljestrom 5-7 6-2 10-6 (Match TB)
Doubles – First Round: (4) Brunstrom/Norman def. Delgado/Skupski 6-4 6-7(6-8) 10-5 (Match TB)
Doubles – First Round: (WC) Reynolds/Russell def. Cerretani/Fruttero 6-3 6-3
Doubles – First Round: Huey/Inglot def. Ito/Soeda 6-4 7-6(8-6)
Doubles – First Round: Blake/Querrey def. Souza/Zeballos 2-6 7-6(12-10) 10-8 (Match TB)
