Fifth seed Kevin Anderson toppedSam Querrey 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-6(2) to reach the quarter-finals of the US Men’s Clay Court Championship Thursday in Houston.
Both players struggled to capitalise on their break point opportunities, with Querrey going two for 10 and Anderson converting just one of nine chances. The South African won seven fewer points than Querrey, but surged ahead in the final set tie-break to advance in two hours and 42 minutes.
Anderson improved to 3-5 against the American, claiming victory for the second time in three meetings this year. He is bidding to lift his second trophy of the season, having triumphed at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships (d. Matosevic).
In the final eight, Anderson faces No. 4 seed Juan Monaco, who beat Japan’sTatsuma Ito 6-3, 6-3. The Argentine broke Ito four times to wrap up the win in one hour and 38 minutes.
Monaco is through to his third quarter-final in 2012. He captured his fourth career title at the VTR Open in Vina del Mar (d. Berlocq) and advanced to the semi-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami (l. to Djokovic).
