For the second straight year, Brooke Austin and Samantha Crawford found themselves locked in a three-set battle in an early-round girls’ 18s ITF singles matchup at the Easter Bowl.
Last year it was the unseeded Crawford of Taramac, Fla., beating the No. 11 Austin of Indianapolis in the second round 6-4 in the third. But this year, it was the unseeded Austin who pulled off the win, downing the No. 5-seeded Crawford 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 on the first day of the ITF girls’ 18s play on a warm 82-degree day at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort on Monday.
Austin said the victory was extra special especially since she sat out for eight months with a broken left foot. The Easter Bowl is Austin’s sixth tournament back since the injury.
“It’s hard to get back to where I was but I’m working on getting my confidence back,” said Austin, 16, who won the USTA Girls’ 18s Spring Nationals last month in Mobile, Ala. “I still need to work on my movement and getting my rhythm back and hopefully that’ll improve as I keep playing more matches.”
The first round of the girls’ 16s also began on Monday with Kristina Hovsepyan of Danville, Calif., overcoming a slow start to upset No. 2 Olivia Sneed of Prairie Village, Kan., 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Hovsepyan said she struggled with nerves in the first set but found a way to fight back despite getting shutout in the first set.
“I didn’t want to go down without a fight,” Hovsepyan said. “I started grinding a little more and winning a few more points. I was serving a little smarter and wasn’t going for first serves as much and keeping the ball in play and that helped me slowly get back in the match.”
Hovsepyan, who trains at the Everett Academy in Boca Raton, Fla., called it one of the best victories of her young career. “I feel great. I feel like I can take on the world,” Hovsepyan said. “This is my last 16s Super Nationals so it feels good, and hopefully I can continue to do well.”
In the boys’ 16s, Frances Tiafoe, an unseeded 14-year-old from College Park, Md., who reached the Carson 16s finals last week, opened the tournament with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory over Sam Hoogland from Glenview, Ill. Tiafoe was up 6-4, 4-1, but Hoogland fired back to make it a match before Tiafoe finished him off in a tiebreaker.
“I dropped my intensity a bit and allowed him to get back but I picked it up again and closed out the match,” Tiafoe said.
Tiafoe is embracing the challenge of moving up and playing in the 16s. “I have a lot of confidence right now after reaching the finals of Carson and winning tournaments earlier in the year,” Tiafoe said.
Tiafoe and his coach at the Junior Tennis Training Center (JTTC), Misha Kuznetsov, felt it was the right time for Tiafoe to take the next step and play up this week. “It’s a matter of believing and I believe I can win,” Tiafoe said. “Tennis is more mental than anything and right now I’m very confident with my game and feel I can do well with the jump up.”
Tiafoe credits his coach for helping him stay sharp. “He (Kuznetsov) always pushes me and always believes in me, and that’s why we have a good relationship,” Tiafoe said.
Tiafoe begin playing tennis at the age of four in College Park where his dad was a maintenance man. He said it was there where he learned the fundamentals and developed his love of tennis.
“My dad would take me over to the facility all the time and that’s where I started playing for hours and hours,” Tiafoe said. “I’ve very thankful to my dad for everything he did to help me become the player I am today.”
In the boys’ 14s, top-seeded Anudeep Kodali of Durham, N.C., won his second-round match over Andre Mercado of Edinburg, Texas, 6-1, 6-0. This is the second time Kodali has been ranked No. 1 in a USTA Super National, and he says it’s a good challenge to have that target on his back. Kodali, who is 5 feet, 11 inches, says his height is what separates him from other players.
“I can definitely get more power on my serve and run more ground in less steps and get to the ball quicker,” said the 14-year-old Kodali. He added that his backhand has improved significantly this year, so much so that he now considers it his best shot.
