Final Facts

– Williams wins her 40th career WTA title, making her the 14th player in the Open Era to have at least that many. She trails only Venus Williams (43 titles) and Kim Clijsters (41) for most titles among active players.

– This is Williams’ fourth career clay court title and her second in Charleston, having also been victorious the last time she played here in 2008.

– Williams is now 39-15 (she won one of her 40 titles by walkover) in WTA finals.

– Williams’ 15 games lost en route to the title, including just three combined in the semifinal and final, is the fewest for a WTA titlist in 2012.

– Williams is now 5-0 all-time against Safarova.

– Safarova is now 4-7 in WTA finals, having lost her last five.

– Safarova’s week included the first double bagel win of her career, over Polona Hercog in the semifinals.

– Pavlyuchenkova and Safarova win their first title together in their second outing, having been quarterfinalists in Miami last month. It is Pavlyuchenkova’s third career doubles title and Safarova’s first.

– Pavlyuchenkova and Safarova’s only straight set win of the week came in the semifinals over No.1 seeds Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond.

Final Quotes

Serena Williams: “I definitely want to continue this. I’ve never played consistently at such a high level with low errors like this, and the scary thing is I could have served so much better.

“It’s motivating for me to go home and work harder, because I know Lucie and Sam and everyone is going to work hard, too. Now they know what to expect even more when they play me. This is a battle, and I want to continue to win.

Lucie Safarova: “It’s amazing. Nastia and I got our first wildcard in Miami and made the quarters, and here we got our second wildcard and won it. I like doubles. I really enjoy playing doubles and it seems we fit as partners.”
