The stars of the WTA have been singing their praise for the Family Circle Cup and Charleston this week, not just former champions but first-timers alike.

“I always really enjoy my week here,” said Sam Stosur, the 2010 champion here. “The tournament is wonderful and I have great memories from here, but I have to say the first thing I think of when I think of Charleston is the food at the restaurants! No matter where I am in the world I make an effort to see all the different places to eat, but here’s it’s super easy to do that. I’m staying downtown and have a few friends here so it’s always a really enjoyable time.”

“I love Charleston,” said Sabine Lisicki, the 2009 champion here. “This is where I won my first WTA title, so it will always have a special place in my heart. And whenever I come here I feel like I play better – just walking out onto center court makes me play better. I always love coming back here.”

“I really love it here. I have so many supporters here, and I absolutely love the food here – too much,” said Serena Williams, who was a Family Circle Cup winner in 2008. “I keep tweeting how I’m having so much trouble with the food. That’s actually my Achilles heel, soul food and southern food.”

“I like it a lot in Charleston,” said Lucie Safarova, this year’s No.9 seed. “It can be difficult for European players to stay so long in the US, unless you have a home here too, of course, but Charleston is so nice that it doesn’t matter. The people are so nice and the fans are great. It also makes it special that it’s the only tournament on green clay. It’s very unique.”

“I’m very happy I came here. It’s my first time here,” said this year’s No.8 seed, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. “It’s so different coming from Miami to here, because it’s really quiet here, and the culture and the people are really nice. The weather is very nice too. It’s a great place to get some matches.”
