Doubles – Final: (5) Kirilenko/Petrova def. (6) Errani/Vinci 7-6(7-0) 4-6 10-4 (Match TB)
Now here is a statistic to think about: Errani/Vinci won only 49% of first serve points in this match. In doubles.
Which perhaps explains a little. The two have seven titles together in the last two years, but every one of them has been an International. They really struggle in the big ones.
To be sure, Nadia Petrova has just plain struggled in doubles lately. This is her first doubles title in almost two years; her last was Charleston 2010 with Huber. Her singles seems to be stalled, but this has to feel promising. It’s promising for another reason for Maria Kirilenko: Her first doubles title of the year, and the best of her career, will put her back in the Top Ten.
Charleston
Agnieszka Radwanska may be one of the busiest players on the Tour, but that doesn’t mean she is entirely immune to injury. On Sunday, the day after winning Miami, she announced that she was pulling out of Charleston (where she was to be the #1 seed) with a back injury.
It won’t affect her ranking; she will stay #4. The main effect is to cause seed promotion; Marion Bartoli, Serena Williams, Lucia Safarova, and Nadia Petrova all move up a seeding tier; Marina Erakovic becomes the #17 seed, and a Lucky Loser spot will be created.
