Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) N Djokovic def. (5) D Ferrer 6-2
7-6(7-1)
That second set was probably a lot closer than Novak
Djokovic wanted, but David Ferrer couldn’t keep it up in the
tiebreak. It doesn’t make much short-term difference;
Djokovic was assured the #1 ranking no matter what and
Ferrer the #5. But Ferrer obviously isn’t gaining much
ground on the Big Four.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (21) J Monaco def. (8) M Fish 6-1
6-3
Mardy Fish got into this match only briefly, in the middle
of the second set, when he managed a couple of holds and his
only break. But then it was right back into the funk. It was
pretty ugly; Fish won only 39% of the points. Which means
that he will fall from #8 to #9; Janko Tipsarevic is the new
#8. And Juan Monaco is the new #16, overtaking Richard
Gasquet and Kei Nishikori. A nice way to celebrate turning
28….
Doubles – Semifinal: (7) Paes/Stepanek def. (1) Bryan/Bryan
6-4 6-4
Paes and Stepanek are probably wondering why they didn’t get
together before…. This is turning into a very tough season
for them.
Doubles – Semifinal: (2) Mirnyi/Nestor def. (6)
Bhupathi/Bopanna 6-2 6-4
This was the only match scheduled for the #2 court (although
they ended up moving the other doubles match as well), but
it didn’t slow Mirnyi/Nestor down very much. They continue
applying pressure to the Bryans with every point they earn.
They are now with a thousand points of #1. Here is how we
currently show the Bryans, Mirnyi, Nestor, Llodra/Zimonjic,
and Paes:
1..(1) Bryan…………..9480
1..(1) Bryan…………..9480
3..(3) Mirnyi………….8670
3..(3) Nestor………….8670
5..(5) Llodra………….7560
6..(6) Zimonjic………..7440
7..(7) Paes……………5615
Interesting that three of last year’s finalists (Mirnyi,
Nestor, and Paes) are back.
