Roger Federer is considered by many to be the greatest tennis player of all time. He has won a total of sixteen Grand Slam titles! Unfortunately, a couple months ago his world ranking slid down to number four. Roger has consistently been in the top three since 2003. What an amazing accomplishment for the 30-year-old Switzerland native!
Roger Federer is my favorite tennis player because he seems like such a pleasant man. Yes, he is one of the most successful tennis players, but he is an even better person off the courts. In July of 2011, Federer launched a three million dollar initiative to build schools for African children through his Roger Federer Foundation. Federer has visited Africa multiple times bringing tennis gear and warm smiles to Africans in Malawi. Roger has inspired me to be a better tennis player off and on the courts.
Whether I am watching Wimbledon or the Australian Open, I always enjoy watching Federer play tennis. Whenever he hits the “tween-er” for a winner is always jaw-dropping. He also manages to remain calm throughout every match, even at the most difficult and tough times. In those rare times he has lost his cool, it is frankly quite hard to watch. You can tell that he has so much passion for the game. I love the emotions he shows when he wins and even when he loses. I also love the way he drops to his knees after winning a slam and cries tears of joy. Roger is truly a pleasure to watch.
One of my fondest memories of Federer was after the French Open. Roger was handed the microphone after the match to speak to the crowd. I was expecting him to speak English, but he spoke in fluent French! He is also fluent in German, Swiss, and in English. Not only is it enjoyable to watch his matches, the after game interviews are always fun to watch. Roger shows classiness and professionalism in his interviews. He is the true personification of the gentleman’s sport that tennis is all about.
Nowadays Federer is considered the underdog compared to Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Some people say he is getting old, but I believe Federer still has a lot of good tennis left in him and should not be disregarded.
