Indian Wells, CA – World #1 Novak Djokovic put an end to South African Kevin Anderson’s win streak this afternoon in the third round of the 2012 BNP Paribas Open. It was a bit of a tussle for the Serbian as Anderson’s high powered serve and blistering ground strokes were stunning. Djokovic remained calm however and withstood the blows, eventually finding his footing and putting the big South African on the run. From there it was just a matter of time as Anderson started to spray balls and was unable to contend with the speed of Djokovic.
One of the biggest strengths of Djokovic is the fact that he makes his opponents unable to truly attack him. Whether he’s hitting his groundstrokes aggressively or playing defense, Djokovic’s shot depth keeps people at bay. Anderson became frustrated and impatient in the 2nd set and tried to rush through his shots in order to get to the net. But because Djokovic’s shots were landing deep a majority of the time, his plan led to many errors and framed shots. Djokovic probably didn’t play his best tennis today but he was able to get errors when he needed them, serve well, and effectively move Anderson around the court and out of position. From there, the 6-2 6-3 scoreline is unavoidable and Djokovic moves into the round of 16 to face Pablo Andjuar of Spain.
