Acapulco
Singles – Final: (1) D Ferrer def. (8) F Verdasco 6-1 6-2
We always like to something unusual about finals, but what is there to say about this? It is, after all, David Ferrer’s third straight title in Acapulco. Not much new to say about that! What Ferrer himself said was, “I am very, very happy. I played my best match of the week tonight. I felt I was very solid and my game went really well. As Fernando hits so hard, I knew I had to be solid and counter him and I think I did it very well, especially at the beginning. I also know Fernando didn’t play his best tennis today but that’s tennis. You have good days and sometimes bad days.”
And he benefits, at least slightly: He not only regains the #5 ranking, but this title means that he has a significant lead over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Things could still change at Indian Wells, but his position looks a lot stronger.
Fernando Verdasco is still looking for a title after his long drought, but he picks up his best score in a year and a half; the result should put him back in the Top Twenty. And he does pick up a consolation prize:
Doubles – Final: Marrero/Verdasco def. Granollers/M Lopez 6-3 6-4
Prior to February 2012, Fernando Verdasco had only one doubles title (Stockholm 2004, with Feliciano Lopez). Now, he has two in as many weeks: First Buenos Aires, now this. Is it much consolation for the singles loss? Some, at least: “At least I won the doubles final. It’s my first ATP World Tour 500 doubles title. The feeling after winning the doubles is much better now. So I’m glad I won one of the two finals. I think we had similar games because we were all Spanish. We’re all baseline players. The match was close. The key was we just had a better day.”
