Andy Murray is on his own with his regular team at the Dubai Championships, with the Scot’s coach Ivan Lendl at home in Florida with his own duties on court. The 51-year-old Lendl, who helped Murray to a Brisbane title last month as their relationships began, had to deal with a senior’s loss in Delray Beach, Florida to Carlos Moya.
Murray, playing Dubai, is keeping in telephone coaching contact. “I’ll speak to him down here. (Friend and extra coach) Danny I’m sure will speak to him as well. With the time change it’s not always going to be that easy to watch the matches,” he said after getting past German Michael Berrer and into the second round in the emirate.
But Murray, who did without a mentor quite nicely for 18 months, is not dependent on daily input from eight-time Grand Slam winner Lendl either. He’s still carrying his own team which has looked after him, his body and his diet for some years.
“That’s why it’s important that whoever is with you has a good idea of how the match has gone and the things you’ve done well and haven’t done well and can report that back,” Murray said of the long-distance coaching protocol.
“I’ll speak to Ivan as well and let him know that there are things I was concerned about, things I want to improve on,” said Murray after his patchy win. “You can’t look at the first match in four weeks and, you know, overanalyze it. You’ve just got to take it for what it is.
“There was some good stuff in there; there was some not so good stuff. I’ll need to get better.”
