Singles – First Round: (1) Roberta Vinci def. Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-2 7-6(7-5)

One more win and Roberta Vinci will rise to #22.

Singles – First Round: (2) Flavia Pennetta def. Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-4 6-2

Being Italian seems to be a formula for success around here, but Flavia Pennetta needs two more wins if she is to climb in the rankings at all.

Singles – First Round: (3) Sara Errani def. Irina Falconi 6-1 6-1

Usual story: No points yet for Sara Errani. But this is a draw where she ought to be able to advance fairly deep.

Singles – First Round: Magdalena Rybarikova def. (5) Alexandra Dulgheru 2-6 7-5 7-6(7-3)

Another week, another failure to rise above #55 for Alexandra Dulgheru.

Singles – First Round: (6) Johanna Larsson def. Sesil Karatantcheva (Q) 1-6 6-4 6-3

Sofia Arvidsson’s Memphis title last week means that Arvidsson, rather than Johanna Larsson, is now Sweden’s #1 player. But Larsson has the chance to get the spot back this week.

Singles – First Round: Anna Tatishvili def. Eva Birnerova 6-4 4-6 6-3

Eva Birnerova will remain a few spots shy of the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: Estrella Cabeza Candela (LL) def. Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-4 6-4

Cabeza Candela took the place of Gisela Dulko, who withdrew due to illness. For Dulko, that may well mean that she will lose her Top Hundred spot soon.

Singles – First Round: Edina Gallovits-Hall (Q) def. Greta Arn 7-5 7-5

Between qualifying and first round points, Edina Gallovits-Hall is now firmly back in the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: Sofia Arvidsson def. (Q) Petra Rampre 6-2 6-4

A nice win for Sofia Arvidsson, given that she had only two days to adjust to the change of surfaces and doesn’t like clay anyway. She needs one more win to start adding points, though.

Singles – First Round: Michaella Krajicek def. Alexandra Cadantu 7-5 3-6 6-3

Another going-against-surfaces result, but Alexandra Cadantu may still have been tired from Monterrey.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Mariana Duque-Marino def. (WC) Nadia Abdala 6-1 6-0

Facing an opponent ranked #542 is often a big help….

Doubles – First Round: (3) Begu/Cornet def. Babos/Birnerova 6-3 6-1

Timea Babos is probably still recovering from winning her first title….

Doubles – First Round: Brianti/Camerin def. Bacsinszky/Larsson 4-6 6-4 10-5 (Match TB)

———-

Singles – First Round:(1) D Ferrer def. (WC) S Gonzalez 6-1 6-2

David Ferrer plays a .pretty heavy schedule, so this doesn’t do him any good — but it extends his more-than-two-year winning streak here. That has to be a good omen.

Singles – First Round:(2) N Almagro def. (Q) P Riba 6-2 3-6 6-2

No benefit for Nicolas Almagro yet, either, but if he can hold his seed, he has a good shot at regaining the #11 ranking. Especially in light of the next result, which makes it unlikely that he will fall:

Singles – First Round: C Berlocq def. (3) G Simon 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Carlos Berlocq never loses first rounds any more, but even taking that into account, Gilles Simon is in rotten form. He will not rise above #13, and may well fall. Berlocq is making a real run for the Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: (4) K Nishikori def. A Montanes 6-2 4-1, retired (back)

Kei Nishikori really seems to want to try to solve clay. And it’s working surprisingly well, although he’s getting a lot of help from his opponents. This isn’t yet enough points to affect his ranking, though.

Singles – First Round: A Ramos def. (6) J Monaco 7-6(7-2) 5-3, retired (dehydration)

What a time to quit! On the other hand, Juan Monaco wasn’t likely to turn this around. This assures that he won’t be making the Top Twenty.

Singles – First Round: (8) F Verdasco def. F Volandri 6-0 6-2

No movement for Fernando Verdasco yet, but at least he finally managed a very good match, winning almost two-thirds of the points.

Singles – First Round: L Kubot def. D Garza (WC) 6-1 6-3

More evidence, perhaps, that the ATP needs to bring back bonus points. Or maybe negative bonus points for beating wildcards….

Singles – First Round: S Giraldo def. D Nalbandian 6-3 6-2

Santiago Giraldo has been slumping, but David Nalbandian is apparently hurting again.

Singles – First Round: J Chardy def. R Machado 7-6(7-4) 6-3

There is a fair chance this will drop Rui Machado below #80.

Singles – First Round: S Wawrinka def. J Ferrero 2-6 6-3 6-4

Another disappointing week for Juan Carlos Ferrero, who will remain closer to #50 than #40. Stanislas Wawrinka seems very likely to gain at least two ranking spots.

Doubles – First Round: Ferrer/Ramos def. (3) Butorac/Soares 7-6(7-1) 7-5

Strange that David Ferrer would choose to play doubles here, where he has so much on the line in singles. But he really does like this place….

Doubles – First Round: Granollers/M Lopez def. Andujar/Berlocq 6-3 6-4

A bit surprising that Granollers/Lopez aren’t seeded here. They are real candidates to do damage on this surface.

Doubles – First Round: Marrero/Verdasco def. (WC) Diaz-Barriga/Ramirez 6-1 6-1

Five straight wins for Marrero/Verdasco, although this one was pretty cheap.

Doubles – First Round: (Alt) Souza/Volandri def. Kubot/F Mayer 6-2 6-7(4-7) 10-7 (Match TB)

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
