Canada booked their place in men’s World Group 2 and Chile secured their spot in the women’s World Group for the BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Seoul, Korea after both teams progressed from last week’s Americas qualification event in Mexico City.
Top seeds Canada defeated the host nation in the men’s final thanks to singles victories from Philippe Bedard and Joel Dembe, who then combined in the doubles to give the North American side a 3-0 victory. It was a much closer affair in the women’s final with No. 1 seeds Chile avenging their round-robin defeat to Colombia and secure qualification. Angelica Bernal (COL) and Maria Antoineta Ortiz (CHI) reproduced their singles victories to force another decisive doubles rubber but this time it was the Chilean pairing of Francisca Mardones and Ortiz who got the better of Bernal and Johana Martinez to claim the victory.
This week Antalya, Turkey and Nairobi, Kenya, host the last two qualification events for Europe and Africa respectively. For more information visit www.itftennis.com/wheelchair.
