Kuala Lumpur

It was mostly a good draw for qualifying seeds: #1 Hsieh Su-Wei, #2 Karolina Pliskova, and #3 Kristyna Pliskova all made the main draw in straight sets. But the fourth qualifier was unseeded; Nudnida Luangnam beat long-struggling Elena Bovina 6-2 6-4.

Singles – First Round: (5) Petra Martic def. Erika Sema 4-6 6-4 7-5

This won’t move Petra Martic above #60, but this draw is open enough that she has a good chance.

Singles – First Round: (7) Jelena Dokic def. Kristina Mladenovic 6-3 6-1

Defending champion Jelena Dokic is still below #100 in safe points, but this is a better-looking start than we frankly expected.

Singles – First Round: Misaki Doi def. (WC) Olga Puchkova 4-6 6-1 6-2

Whatever it was that Olga Puchkova lost half a decade ago, she clearly hasn’t ever rediscovered it.

Singles – First Round: Olivia Rogowska def. Elitsa Kostova 6-4 6-0

This should take Olivia Rogowska above #125.

Singles – First Round: Kurumi Nara def. Noppawan Lertcheewakarn 6-4 6-3

Kurumi Nara defends her points and will stay above #150.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Dellacqua/Gajdosova def. Bremond/Zheng 6-1 3-6 11-9 (Match TB)

Note that the loser here is Zheng Saisai, not Zheng Jie.

Doubles – First Round: Chang/Chuang def. (4) Aoyama/Chan 3-6 6-2 10-8 (Match TB)

Also note that that’s Chan Chin-Wei, not Chan Yung-Jan. This draw is so weak that the top seeds have a combined ranking of #100. So we may well see a lot of surprises.

Doubles – First Round: Liu/Xu def. Hsu/Lu 6-1 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Bovina/Keothavong lead Sema/Woerle 6-3 suspended/rain

Acapulco

These days, it is always one step forward, one step back for Yaroslava Shvedova. She was doing well against the top qualifying seed here, Edina Gallovits-Hall — and then she hurt her leg and had to retire.

Gallovits-Hall was one of only two seeds to make it through qualifying, the other being #5 Sesil Karatancheva. Rounding out the qualifying list are Petra Rampre and Mariana Duque-Marino.

Singles – First Round: Melinda Czink def. Stephanie Dubois 7-6(8-6) 6-3

Not a huge upset, but maybe Melinda Czink is getting her upset artistry back.
