Singles – Quarterfinal: J Melzer def. (1) J Isner 6-3 7-6(8-6)
We knew from the moment the draw came out that the top quarter here would be really tough, and so it proved. John Isner couldn’t do anything against Jurgen Melzer’s serve, and it cost him. He may still rise to #11, but he loses the chance to clinch it. Melzer will rise above #35.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) R Stepanek def. S Querrey (WC) 7-6(7-5) 6-0
When Sam Querrey came apart, he came apart fast, winning only seven points in the second set. Radek Stepanek is now very close to the Top 25.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) M Raonic def. O Rochus 6-3 7-6(7-3)
Milos Raonic had 21 aces in this match, and had never faced a break point — until he was up 6-3 5-4 and serving. So what did he do? He lost the first three points of the game and was broken at 15. But it was only a brief failure. This might be enough to put him back in the Top Thirty; it will depend on how Jurgen Melzer does in the semifinal.
Singles – Quarterfinal: .B Becker def. L Kubot 7-5 7-6(7-5)
Benjamin Becker’s comeback seems truly to be getting into gear. He now has more points here than in all his other events combined. He remains below #150 — but not by much.
