Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) D Ferrer def. F Gonzalez (WC) 6-2 6-4
The first set of this wasn’t much, but Fernando Gonzalez put up a genuine fight in the second. Not a bad ending to his last event on clay.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) N Almagro (WC) def. I Andreev (Q) 6-3 7-5
Even with the loss, Igor Andreev is looking a lot more competitive than he did at this time last year. But it’s almost impossible to beat Nicolas Almagro at a Latin American clay event. The Spaniard keeps alive his faint hope of retaining the #11 ranking.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) S Wawrinka def. (4) K Nishikori 6-4 6-2
Finally the clay caught up with Kei Nishikori. It doesn’t appear it will affect his ranking; we show him remaining at #17. Stanislas Wawrinka should return to the Top 25 if he can win his next match.
Singles – Quarterfinal: D Nalbandian def. C Berlocq 6-0 6-3
This was goofy. David Nalbandian won the first set 6-0 — and then was broken in the first game of the second set. But Nalbandian picked himself up after two games and won five straight games to reach 5-2. He let Carlos Berlocq save a couple of match points, but then served it out. It appears Berlocq will make the Top Forty, but just barely.
Doubles – Semifinal: Marrero/Verdasco def. Prodon/Zeballos 7-6(7-5) 6-3
