Julia Goerges went down fighting in the weekend Dubai final, with her 7-5, 6-4 loss to Agnieszka Radwanska anything but a bitter disappointment. In fact, the 19th-ranked German said she could not be more pleased with her week in the Gulf.
“I’m not disappointed, it was a big step in the right direction for me,” said the German who would have had to face world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka had the top seed not withdrawn injured before the start of the week.
“I was leaving everything on the court, so I don’t know why I should be disappointed about this week. Radwanska’s a Top 5 player, she’s been there for a long time.
“If you lose 5 and 4 in one hour 40, I think I shouldn’t be disappointed at all. It gives me a lot confidence to see, okay, those players are close to me, and, well, I can still beat those players.”
Goerges was seeking her third career title after winning her second last spring in Stuttgart on clay. “This is a good sign for me. I gave everything that I still had in my tank. At the end we both were pretty tired.
“It was about two or three points at the end. Still, I can be pretty proud of to this week.”
