Singles – Final: (5) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Julia Goerges 7-5 6-4
At the rate things are going, we may have to worry about another #1 without a Slam. This was perhaps closer than the score, but Agnieszka Radwanska was breaking Julia Goerges almost at will. She never appeared in danger.
And so Radwanska wins her fourth title in less than a year, adding this to San Diego, the Pan Pacific, and Beijing. That’s a pretty impressive list! Frankly, it’s a bit hard to believe she came here ranked #6.
#6, but climbing. With this title, she passes Samantha Stosur to reach a career high #5. And if she continues as she is, it truly would be no surprise to see her go higher still.
Julia Goerges is still looking for her first title since winning Stuttgart, last year but the result represents a rankings boost even so. #19 coming in, we show her rising to #16.
Doubles – Final: (1) Huber/Raymond def. (2) Mirza/Vesnina 6-2 6-1
A bad, bad combination, Mirza/Vesnina and finals. As we said yesterday, in another round, they might have had a chance. But put them in a final and things get worse. They do win some titles (although not Slam titles), but it clearly affects them.
And, of course, Huber/Raymond are very hot right now. This is their third title in a row: Paris, Doha, Dubai. They are now 17-2 in 2012. They under-performed in Melbourne, so it’s a little too early to talk about qualifying for the year-end Championships, but it seems very likely if they don’t get hurt. And they will be #1 for a long, long time.
