Singles – Semifinal: Julia Goerges def. (3) Caroline Wozniacki 7-6(7-3) 7-5
And here we thought Caroline Wozniacki was coming out of it! She was the defending champion, and appeared to have the chance to do it again. The good news is, those points are already off, so she doesn’t lose any more ground — but she remains a rather weak #4. Julia Goerges is at #16, and will be #15 if she can win the title.
Singles – Semifinal: (5) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (8) Jelena Jankovic 6-2 2-6 6-0
When Jelena Jankovic broke down, she broke down pretty completely — evidently her injury acted up again; she didn’t win a single point on second serve in the final set, nor a single point on Agnieszka Radwanska’s serve. She remains stuck at #14. But Agnieszka Radwanska is now only one win away from the Top Five.
Doubles – Semifinals: (1) Huber/Raymond def. (4) Llagostera Vives/Rodionova 6-3 6-2
Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond are definitely staking their claims for Olympic spots. Hard to imagine Raymond getting bumped under current conditions. Of course, it was hard to imagine the last time, too….
Doubles – Semifinals: (2) Mirza/Vesnina def. Hsieh/Peng 6-2 6-7(5-7) 13-11 (Match TB)
Mirza/Vesnina might have a genuine shot at Huber/Raymond in an early round. In a final — we’ll see….
Memphis
Singles – Semifinal: (4) Marina Erakovic def. Vera Dushevina 6-1 4-6 6-4
Every match here seems to be a struggle for Marina Erakovic, but she again managed to come through. That takes her up to about #46. A title would make it probably #42. It will be her best-ever result no matter what.
Singles – Semifinal: Sofia Arvidsson def. Alberta Brianti 6-3 7-5
Just to put this in perspective: Sofia Arvidsson’s career record at Memphis is now 17-6, 74%. That’s in eight appearances. Her record at non-Memphises in 2004-2012 is 66-106, 38%. Even at indoor events in that time, her non-Memphis record is 14-16, 47%. Think she likes this place?
Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. (4) Krajicek/Tatishvili 6-3 6-3
Monterrey
Singles – Quarterfinal: Alexandra Cadantu def. (8) Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-2 6-0
This Latin American season is really bringing out the young players. Alexandra Cadantu has had some decent Challenger results, but this is a WTA-level breakthrough for her — and will take her from #110 to around #90. She was fortunate to finish so fast — it started raining soon after this finished.
