Singles – Second Round: Albano Olivetti (Q) def. (2) M Fish 6-3 3-6 6-3
No, we don’t know if this really says anything about twenty-year-old Albano Olivetti. Mardy Fish compared his serve with Ivo Karlovic, but the ATP’s web site didn’t even know whether he’s right- or left-handed. He supposedly had only one challenger win prior to this week. The best score on his record was 15 points from a Futures event. He had 100 points. He has now increased that by more than 50%, and will rise from #388 to around #285.
Singles – Second Round: (4) J del Potro def. N Davydenko 6-7(6-8) 6-4, retired (right foot)
This was a very long, tough match — almost two hours for just two sets. And Nikolay Davydenko seemed to be in charge. What a time to have to quit, especially since he seemed finally to be rediscovering his form! Because others have been adding points, Davydenko is going to lose his Top Forty ranking.
Singles – Second Round: (5) R Gasquet def. I Kunitsyn 6-3 6-2
Richard Gasquet still needs a lot more to stay Top Fifteen, but this place is very friendly to French players.
Singles – Second Round: M Llodra def. (6) A Dolgopolov 6-4 5-7 7-6(7-5)
Again the French pull off a surprise in France. That will cost Alexandr Dolgopolov at least one, and very possibly two, ranking spots.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Bhupathi/Bopanna def. Clement/Dlouhy 6-3 6-4
Not a great win, but at least it’s a win. Bhupathi/Bopanna have had far too few of those so far this year.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Brown/Tsonga def. (3) Rojer/Zelenay 6-1 7-6(7-4)
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Mahut/Roger-Vasselin def. Brunstrom/Norman 6-2 3-6 10-5 (Match TB)
