Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) Caroline Wozniacki def. Ana Ivanovic 6-3 6-4
For the first time in months, Caroline Wozniacki is moving in the right direction. Oh, she remains #4, and will not climb in the rankings any time soon — she is still almost a thousand points behind #3 Petra Kvitova. But this result plus the next one mean that Wozniacki now has more than a 400 point lead on her nearest rival, and that can only increase. It’s a genuine boost to her chances of staying #4. She costs Ana Ivanovic her Top Fifteen chance.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) Jelena Jankovic def. (4) Samantha Stosur 6-4 6-2
Suddenly Jelena Jankovic is looking strong again. It won’t help her this week; she will remain #14. But maybe she can finally start climbing in the coming months. Unlike Samantha Stosur, who suddenly finds herself in danger:
Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (9) Sabine Lisicki 6-2 6-1
Agnieszka Radwanska seems to be settling in — and she has doors opening for her. Stosur’s loss means that Radwanska can earn the #5 ranking by winning the title here. Sabine Lisicki will remain #13.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Julia Goerges def. Daniela Hantuchova 4-6 6-3 6-4
As it turned out, they saved the exciting match for last. It will be interesting to see how much energy Julia Goerges has left after this. But it appears she earns enough points to rise to #16. Daniela Hantuchova will remain at #21.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Mirza/Vesnina def. Martinez Sanchez/Peer 6-1 4-6 10-8 (Match TB)
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Llagostera Vives/Rodionova def. Kops-Jones/Spears 6-3 2-6 12-10 (Match TB)
A bit of a surprise, given the surface and how well Kops-Jones/Spears have been playing. Maybe the Americans just got tired.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Hsieh/Peng def. Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova 6-3 2-6 10-5 (Match TB)
This continues to be a tough year for Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova. They will surely stay together for the Olympics — but it might be interesting to see what happens after that.
