It’s only February, but most of the top 10 women have already suffered injury. The Dubai Duty Free Championships lost Victoria Azarenka (ankle), Petra Kvitova (virus), Li Na (back) and Vera Zvonareva (hip) before they even played a match, and Marion Bartoli also limped out after suffering a calf injury while playing in Doha last week. Jelena Jankovic has also been playing with a muscle tear, Dominika Cibulkova retired with a hamstring injury and Maria Kirilenko withdrew from doubles with a neck injury.
So far, Agnieszka Radwanska is still able to play, and she was pondering why, with the longer off-season, players are still getting injured.
“Actually was talking with my coach yesterday,” she said. “You know, it’s February and a lot girls are injured. But, you know, I think it’s also explanation that sometimes in the off-season the girls are doing too much. Because you think you have two months off and then you know can work hard.
“But then suddenly then you have some tough match in the beginning of the year and then it’s too much for the body. In the head everything is fine, but for the body not really. You cannot really cheat body. If it’s painful, it’s painful. So I think because of that.”
