Singles – First Round: X Malisse def. (2) A Roddick 7-6(10-8) 7-5
It’s pretty clear that Andy Roddick still isn’t his old self — although it’s worth remembering that he hasn’t had many matches since his problems started. But this means that he will remain stuck below #25 — a big handicap for him when we get to Indian Wells and Miami.
Singles – First Round: (3) R Stepanek def. B Reynolds (Q) 6-3 6-2
Radek Stepanek needs at least a semifinal to move above #28, but his Top Thirty spot now looks safe.
Singles – First Round: (4) M Raonic def. E Gulbis 6-2 7-6(7-3)
Just as in 2011, Milos Raonic follows up a win at San Jose with a good start at Memphis. He’s still below #35 — but is likely to keep climbing.
Singles – First Round: O Rochus def. (5) A Bogomolov Jr. 1-6 6-4 7-6(7-5)
Alex Bogomolov Jr. simply cannot cross that hump and hit the Top Thirty. We’d guess he’ll end up around #35.
Singles – First Round: P Petzschner def. (6) J Benneteau 7-6(7-5) 7-6(8-6)
It has been a long several weeks for Julien Benneteau; he may have run out of steam. There is a chance he will fall below #30.
Singles – First Round: (7) K Anderson def. R Ginepri (Q) 7-5 6-3
Tough for Robby Ginepri to make much rankings progress when he keeps running into top players. But just making it through qualifying will probably move him above #210.
Singles – First Round: J Melzer def. D Istomin 6-7(2-7) 6-3 7-6(7-4)
A few more points and Denis Istomin would have clinched his Top Fifty ranking. As it is, it’s going to be a close thing. Jurgen Melzer needs more than this to count.
Singles – First Round: L Kubot def. J Levine (Q) 7-6(7-2) 6-4
Jesse Levine remains stalled at about #135.
Singles – First Round: B Becker def. D Sela 6-4 6-1
It’s only first round points for Benjamin Becker, but this is a big tournament. This is just about the best result of his comeback.
Doubles – First Round: (1) Mirnyi/Nestor def. Anderson/Knowles 7-5 6-2
It has been a while since ex-partners Knowles and Nestor have faced off. Obviously Nestor is continuing to have the best of the split.
Doubles – First Round: (WC) Harrison/Kudla def. Erlich/A Ram 6-2 6-3
Erlich/Ram have been very up-and-down in recent years, but this is one of the worst results yet….
Doubles – First Round: Fleming/Hutchins def. Butorac/Soares 7-6(7-5) 6-3
Butorac/Soares just came from clay, so maybe they needed more time to shift surfaces.
Doubles – First Round: Dodig/Melo def. (WC) Sweeting/Tomic 6-4 6-4
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Isner/Querrey def. Bogomolov/Kubot 2-6 6-3 15-13 (Match TB)
A couple of years ago, Isner/Querrey did well enough in doubles that they had a shot at the year-end championships. But they didn’t play enough. Then Querrey got hurt. It will be interesting to see how well he comes back in doubles — and how much he plays.
