Singles – Second Round: (1) D Ferrer def. (WC) F Bagnis 6-3 6-4
David Ferrer can expect to lose the #5 ranking this week to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, at least temporarily — but the better he does here, the easier it will be to get it back. And, presumably, the more easily he wins his matches here, the more energy he will have for the bigger events.
Singles – Second Round: (4) K Nishikori def. V Hanescu 3-6 7-5 6-1
If nothing else, Kei Nishikori is definitely getting in his clay practice! It doesn’t help his ranking yet, though.
Singles – Second Round: (6) S Wawrinka def. B Paire 6-3 5-7 6-2
Stanislas Wawrinka needs a final to add to his total. He’s not exactly making a strong case here.
Singles – Second Round: F Gonzalez (WC) def. A Ramos 7-6(8-6) 7-6(7-5)
Suddenly it looks as if Fernando Gonzalez might be able to end his career on a fairly high note. Although this is likely to be the end of the line here; he faces David Ferrer next. So this, if nothing else, is likely to be his last clay win.
Doubles – First Round: (1) Braccialia/Starace def. M Gonzalez/Nishikori 2-6 6-2 10-7 (Match TB)
Pretty soon we won’t have to be counting Gonzalezes so carefully: This event may be the last one with both Fernando and Maximo. Of course, there will still be Maximo and Santiago Gonzalez to worry about.
Doubles – First Round: (2) Mertinak/Sa def. Bolelli/Volandri 6-3 6-4
