After Injuries, Lisicki Thinks About a Career Change |

Sabine Lisicki is currently doing a good job in her tennis after raising her ranking more than 160 places during 2011 and reaching at least the final 16 in the last three Grand Slam tournaments. But she is considering pursuing a possible career in sports medicine once she lays down her competitive racket.

Lisicki was a relative late entrant to the WTA scene after staying at school in Troisdorf in Germany because she was a straight A student. Now the 22 year-old has admitted she is keen to resume her studies and admitted: “I miss it.”

Sabine’s father Richard is a doctor and she said: “I’m interested in the human body. Through the sport we go through so many injuries and health issues, and I learn a lot by talking to the doctors.”

She had plenty of time for such conversations after a horrendous spell of injuries, primarily a left ankle, during 2010 that saw her sidelined from the WTA circuit for five months.

“When I was injured, it was actually funny,” she continued. “Towards the end when I went to the last appointment with the specialist, he was asking: “Did you learn all of this?

“I love studying and I’m very interested in the human body, so it makes sense. That’s one thing I can imagine myself doing.”

Therefore it naturally follows Lisicki has a view on the current spate of injuries and illnesses that have stricken the likes of Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova, Li Na and Vera Zvonareva. “The problem is that the season is from January until November,” she said. “You still want to improve so you’re practicing a lot and pushing your body.

“I think it’s also a very fine line to see how much you can do off the court, still be fit, and not to do too much to get injured. You have to schedule your tournaments very well. You have to know your body and appreciate when you have to take a rest. I learned a lot through all my injuries and I’m definitely getting better at that. Maybe the other girls have to learn it as well.”
