World no.2 Petra Kvitova has been forced to make a late withdrawal from this week’s $2 million Dubai Duty Free Championships after falling prey to a virus infection over the weekend.
Wimbledon and WTA Championship winner Kvitova, who was forced to withdraw from last week’s Qatar Total Open in Doha because of an Achilles Tendon injury, had been handed a first round bye and was likely to face Slovak Dominika Cibulkova in the second round.
German Sabine Lisicki has been handed Kvitova’s place in the draw while another Czech, Petra Cetkovska, gains direct entry into the 28-strong main draw. Kvitova last played as she earned two victories in Fed Cup the week after the Australian Open.
Meanwhile fourth seeded Samantha Stosur will be looking to extend her fortune. 2012 has largely been a disappointment for the US Open champion with the ignominy of a first round exit at the Australian Open the undoubted low point.
Things appear to be looking up although she was completely outplayed in Sunday’s Qatar Total Open final clash with world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, but the 27 year-old’s exploits in Doha ensured she has become the first Australian woman to earn $US10 million in career prize money.
