Singles – First Round: (5) C Berlocq def. E Prodon 6-4 6-0

Another little bit of progress for Carlos Berlocq, who is having the best year of his career. This won’t quite make him Top Forty, but it could well happen here.

Singles – First Round: R Ramirez Hidalgo (Q) def. R Machado 6-3 1-6 6-2

Never get into a long match with Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo on clay. He’ll bore you to death. In this case, it took him just a little more than two hours.

Singles – First Round: I Andreev (Q) def. F Gonzalez (WC) 6-2 6-3

This is two guys at the ends of their careers, but it hasn’t sunk in to Igor Andreev yet. Whereas Fernando Gonzalez may just be going through the motions.

Singles – First Round: V Hanescu def. J Souza 6-3 6-3

Victor Hanescu is European, but he prefers clay; he was probably wise to play here.

Doubles – First Round: Bellucci/Melo def. Montanes/Ramos 6-3 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Gimeno-Traver/Volandri def. Clezar/Zampieri (WC) 6-4 6-3
