Singles – First Round: (7) V Troicki def. T de Bakker (WC) 7-6(8-6) 6-0
It’s looking more and more as if Thiemo de Bakker will never make it back…. Viktor Troicki will probably gain at least one ranking spot as a result of this.
Singles – First Round: P Kohlschreiber def. (8) M Granollers 6-1 1-6 6-4
Philipp Kohlschreiber was sick last week, but evidently he recovers fast. And he didn’t tire himself out in Dagis Cup. One more win would effectively clinch his Top Thirty ranking. Marcel Granollers will probably stay Top 25, but he loses the chance to clinch it.
Singles – First Round: A Seppi def. R de Voest (Q) 1-6 7-6(7-5) 6-2
Andreas Seppi defends what he needs to defend. Two more wins would make him Top Forty.
Singles – First Round: J Nieminen def. I Sijsling (WC) 6-1 6-7(7-9) 7-5
Jarkko Nieminen is just about tied with Seppi in points, and has just about the same number of free slots, and even beat his opponent by a similar score. He also needs a similar result: Two wins and he is Top Forty.
Singles – First Round: N Davydenko def. R Haase 7-5 6-2
Nikolay Davydenko isn’t going to make any friends this way — when he finally wins a match, it’s against a local favorite! But at least he is starting back toward the Top Fifty.
Singles – First Round: M Youzhny def. I Kunitsyn 6-0 6-7(4-7) 6-0
Mikhail Youzhny seems to be auditioning for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but he will need to perform better than that to earn any points.
Doubles – First Round: Bogomolov/Norman def. (4) Bhupathi/Bopanna 6-4 3-6 10-6 (Match TB)
The Bhupathi/Bopanna partnership continues to look rather unpromising. Of course, they still have lots of time until the Olympics….
Doubles – First Round: del Potro/Petzschner def. Cermak/Polasek 7-5 6-3
Frantisek Cermak was willing to play a dead singles match in Davis Cup. We don’t know if that cost him, but it surely didn’t help….
