One out of two isn’t bad, right?
That might be the moral of Monday’s exhibition doubles match. Gael Monfils, who had played out the dead rubber of the France versus Canada Davis Cup tie, was able to play. But Milos Raonic, who had not been able to play reverse singles in Canada, pulled out. Not a good omen for the defending San Jose champion…. As for the result of the doubles match, John McEnroe and Jack Sock beat Monfils and Steven Johnson 6-4 6-4
Singles – First Round: (6) K Anderson def. G Dimitrov 2-6 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-3)
Grigor Dimitrov seems to be just a little off. Or maybe we should say he is off just a little bit of the time. Kevin Anderson won five of the last six points of this match to leave Dimitrov still stuck below #80. Anderson needs two more wins before the points start to count.
Singles – First Round: T Kamke def. I van der Merwe 6-3 6-3
Izak van der Merwe will surely remain below #125 after this. Surprising he even had direct entry — he was the last guy in.
Doubles – First Round: (3) Hanley/J Murray def. Marx/Shamasdin 6-3 7-6(9-7)
Doubles – First Round: Querrey/Sock (WC) def. Knowle/Kohlmann 7-6(7-4) 3-6 10-5 (Match TB)
Julian Knowle has had a distinguished doubles career, but he is really struggling now — it’s hard to believe he will be able to keep his career going at this rate.
