Rafael Nadal has defected to the rival German tournament in Halle, Roger Federer might love Wimbledon but has never even played on Queen’s Club’s grass and Novak Djokovic is still fine-tuning his summer schedule but Andy Murray has committed to play the AEGON Championships in the build up to Wimbledon and intends to become the first British player in 87 years to win the title three times.
Birmingham born Sir Francis Gordon Lowe, champion of the Australian Championships during the First World War and a Baronet in the bargain, was the last British player to lift the weighty Queen’s Club trophy three times and that was back in 1925.
The only kind of title Murray is currently concerned about are of the tennis variety and he is very much aiming for another victory on the lawns of Baron’s Court after first winning the trophy without dropping a set three years ago, and then triumphant again last June in a thrilling, rain-delayed Monday final against Jo Wilfried Tsonga.
“I’m excited to be going back to The Queen’s Club,” said Murray. “It’s a great tournament and the grass courts are as good as anywhere in the world, so it’s the perfect preparation for Wimbledon.
“There’s always a great atmosphere and having won the trophy twice previously, I have nothing but good memories. They also have one of the biggest trophies on the tennis circuit, and most of the Wimbledon champions are on it, so you know it’s a big deal. I’d love to win it again this year.”
