Singles – Final: (3) Daniela Hantuchova def. (4) Maria Kirilenko 6-7(4-7) 6-3 6-3
Let no one claim that Daniela Hantuchova did not earn this win. She was out there battling for more than three hours. If nothing else, she tired Maria Kirilenko out — Kirilenko double-faulted on break point in the eighth game of the final set, and Hantuchova proceeded to serve it out.
She earns her first title since winning here a year ago, and scores the first title defense of 2012. Of course, the fact that she defended her title leaves her still, in effect, treading water in the rankings — she came in at #20, and there she remains.
Maria Kirilenko hadn’t made a final in more than a year, so she adds significant points. Unfortunately, she was in a tough spot in the rankings. Despite the result, she rises only from #26 to #25. At least it’s a fairly strong #25.
Doubles – Final: (1) Mirza/Rodionova def. (4) H.Chan/Y.Chan 3-6 6-1 10-8 (Match TB)
This was predictable from the start; Mirza/Rodionova were by far the strongest team here. The surprise was that it was so close. Maybe it was just that the Chans were more rested — they had to play only one match to get to the final!
It won’t do Sania Mirza any good; she remains #7, and far below #6. But she does win her first title since Washington last year. She has thirteen overall, and has won at least one title for four years straight (plus some before that). Anastasia Rodionova earns her first title since ‘s-Hertogenbosch 2010; she will gain several spots.
