Singles – Final: (9) Angelique Kerber def. (2) Marion Bartoli 7-6(7-3) 5-7 6-3
The astounding results just keep coming for Angelique Kerber. First Top Five win. Career high. Now — a Premier title. As well as a higher career high.
It was a very close match, with each player being broken five times. Kerber won only slightly more points. But she went up an early break in the final set, and she managed to hold onto it to earn not only her first Premier title but her first WTA singles title of any kind. With it, she will rise to #22, another career high. At the rate she is going, a Top Twenty spot seems very likely.
Marion Bartoli falls just short of winning her first French title, but it makes no difference in the short run. She was #7 win or lose. The bad news is, this makes it much harder for her to reach the Top Five in coming weeks. But she will have at least a shot at it.
Doubles – Final: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Groenefeld/Martic 7-6(7-3) 6-1
You knew this was coming, right? Not much to say about it, really. Huber and Raymond can’t improve their rankings; they are already #1 and #2! But it’s good news even so, because they had yet to win a title this year. Now they at least have that little problem off their backs….
