This was a heavier blow for Federer than it was for the Swiss team. Federer doesn’t just represent the Swiss Tennis Association, he represents the pinnacle of the game on a global level. He’s the almost too perfect international representative handling the ambassadorial duties with out the official title and he does a brilliant job. He continues to shatter records in various categories with each match played. Owns a resume of biblical proportion and style of play that is the blueprint of classical beauty we all wish we possessed. With that said, he lost in his own backyard with the weight of the country, the team and his global fan base watching in somewhat disbelief.
John Isner said “it was the match of my career”, it was. He beat arguably the greatest player in the history in of the game representing his country as the “go to guy” on the team in his own backyard on a surface that has been notoriously difficult for the USA team.
This wasn’t a lucky win for Isner, this was Isner peeling back a layer and exposing the next level of his game. Isner is the guy moving to the next level with the drive an attitude that will do extensive damage to the top 4 elite. He’s the guy that everyone fears will be in their portion of draw… and that feeling just intensified.
Does he own Federer, absolutely not! Federer will beat him again this season. But for the moment, hats off to John Isner and his career breakthrough match.
