Singles – Quarterfinal: (9) Angelique Kerber def. (1) Maria Sharapova 6-4 6-4
Maria Sharapova played only one match in Fed Cup, citing injury. One suspects it is still plaguing her. She earned early breaks in both sets here, but couldn’t hang on. It won’t hurt her in the rankings; she rises to #2. And, with word that Petra Kvitova won’t be able to play Doha, she will likely stay there. But she loses her chance to cement the ranking. Angelique Kerber, who scores her first-ever Top Five win, now appears to be a lock for the Top 25.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) Marion Bartoli def. (7) Roberta Vinci 4-6 6-4 7-6(7-2)
Roberta Vinci had a lead in the final set of this, but she couldn’t hold onto it. That slight letdown kills her Top Twenty hopes. Marion Bartoli has now clinched the #7 ranking. She can’t go higher this week, but with the draw as it is, she has a good chance for the title, and if she can do that, she will have a chance to go higher in coming weeks.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Klara Zakopalova def. (6) Julia Goerges 3-6 7-5 6-1
Julia Goerges — who had the trainer out at 4-0 in the third set — loses a chance to clinch a Top Twenty spot; Daniela Hantuchova could still stay ahead of her. Klara Zakopalova is up to about #45.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Yanina Wickmayer def. Mona Barthel (Q) 6-4 6-7(3-7) 6-3
Mona Barthel squandered big chances in the first set of this, and she nearly let the second slip away. Then, perhaps, she ran out of gas. That means she will end up just barely above #40. Yanina Wickmayer will rise to at least #27.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Brianti/Cornet 6-3 6-2
After a tough start, it looks like Huber/Raymond are settling down to take advantage of this weak field.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Groenefeld/Martic def. Kichenok/Kichenok 6-4 6-2
Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Huber/Raymond def. (4) Niculescu/Rosolska walkover (Niculescu: Abdominal Injury)
