Andy Roddick and his team are still battling at his home in Austin against the right hamstring injury which cut his Australian Open short in the second round, with the one-time No. 1 working to try and be fit for a return to the courts in San Jose next week..

But Roddick, currently clinging on just inside the ATP Top 20 admits: he’s not hit a ball for a week or more as he looks after a partially torn tendon.

“It’s a concern, I haven’t hit a ball since Australia,” the 29-year-old told American media. “We’ve just been working on different types of treatment trying to get it right.

“The MRI came back probably not as good as we were hoping. I’m hoping to be hitting balls for the first time this week, and that should get me. If all goes well there, that should be plenty of time to be ready. My only urgent thing right now is getting this hamstring right so I can try to play well at San Jose.”

The American ranked 19th has won the event three times and lost the final to Fernando in his last appearance two years ago.
