SINGLES A: MARDY FISH vs. STANISLAS WAWRINKA
Fish is playing as the United States’ No. 1 singles player for just the third time in 11 career Davis Cup appearances, and the second consecutive tie. He will face Wawrinka, Switzerland’s No. 2 player, on Friday. Fish and Wawrinka have met twice in their careers, with Fish winning both matches. They last met at the US Open Series event in Montreal in 2011, where Fish recorded a 6-3, 6-7(8), 6-0, victory in the quarterfinals. The two players have never met on a clay court.
Fish is 1-4 when leading off a Davis Cup tie, defeating Alejandro Falla in five sets in the 2010 play-off versus Colombia, and losing most recently in five sets to Feliciano Lopez in the 2011 quarterfinal against Spain. He is 2-1 when playing second on Day 1, with his only loss coming to Marin Cilic in the 2009 quarterfinal against Croatia, his most recent appearance playing in the second singles rubber.

SINGLES B: JOHN ISNER vs. ROGER FEDERER
John Isner will be playing singles for the third time in four Davis Cup ties since making his debut in the 2010 World Group first round in Serbia. On Friday, Isner will face Swiss No. 1 and world No. 3 Roger Federer for the third time in their careers. They most recently met in the second round of the ATP Masters event in Shanghai, and also met in the third round of the 2007 US Open, to which Isner earned a main draw wild card after capturing the 2007 NCAA men’s singles title as a senior for the University of Georgia.
Isner is 0-2 in two matches on the first day of a Davis Cup tie. He led off the 2010 first round tie against Serbia, and lost to Viktor Troicki in four sets. In the 2011 first round in Chile, Isner lost to Paul Capdeville in five sets in four hours and 22 minutes, the fifth longest match in U.S. Davis Cup history since the introduction of the tiebreak in 1989. In all, Isner has competed in eight tiebreaks in 17 sets in Davis Cup play.
Federer is 18-2 on the first day of a Davis Cup tie, including a perfect 6-0 record when playing in the opening rubber. He has won 14 consecutive matches on Day 1 of a Davis Cup tie; his last loss came in the 2001 quarterfinal against France, when he lost to Nicolas Escude in four sets.

SINGLES C: MARDY FISH vs. ROGER FEDERER
Fish and Federer will meet for the ninth time in their careers when they face off in the first singles match on Sunday. Federer is 7-1 against Fish, with Fish’s lone victory coming at Indian Wells in 2008. They last met in the ATP World Tour Finals in 2011, where Federer beat Fish in three sets during round robin play.
Fish will play first on Sunday for just the third time in his career, and second consecutive tie. He beat Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo in five sets in the 2010 World Group play-off to secure the tie and help the U.S. maintain its World Group status, and lost to Spain’s Davis Ferrer in the 2011 quarterfinal in a match lasting more than four hours.
Federer is 12-3 when playing first on Sunday, all of which have been live rubbers. He has won six consecutive matches on Sunday of a Davis Cup tie, with his last loss coming to Lleyton Hewitt in the 2003 World Group semifinal in Australia.

SINGLES D: JOHN ISNER vs. STANISLAS WAWRINKA
Should the tie extend to a decisive singles rubber, Isner will play in a live singles rubber on Sunday for the first time in his career. In his only prior singles match on Sunday in a Davis Cup tie, he beat Chile’s Guillermo Rivera-Aranguiz in three sets after the U.S. had clinched the tie.
Isner and Wawrinka have faced each other on three prior occasions, with Isner owning a 2-1 advantage, including their most recent meeting at the ATP Masters event in Paris in 2011. Isner also won their only prior matchup on clay in Belgrade in 2010.
Wawrinka is 1-1 in decisive fifth rubbers, and 3-2 in the final singles rubber overall. He most recently came back from a two-sets-to-one deficit to defeat Lleyton Hewitt in a decisive singles rubber in the 2011 World Group Playoff.
