Singles – First Round (7) Roberta Vinci def. Simona Halep 6-4 6-4

Roberta Vinci still has points to defend, but her Top 25 ranking now looks pretty safe. She leaves Simona Halep still around #60.

Singles – First Round (WC) Pauline Parmentier def. (8) Anabel Medina Garrigues 2-6 6-3 6-3

Pauline Parmentier did good service in Fed Cup, but she was tired and Anabel Medina Garrigues rested. So this is a true surprise. Medina Garrigues wasn’t defending anything, but she may lose a ranking spot or two.

Singles – First Round Yanina Wickmayer def. (LL) Jill Craybas 6-1, retired (Upper Right Leg Injury)

You know the injuries are bad when a player ranked #147 gets a Lucky Loser spot in a Premier event…. Jill Craybas got Jelena Jankovic’s draw spot, and then suffered an injury herself. A jinxed slot, maybe? Yanina Wickmayer, who in effect became seeded when Jankovic pulled out, still needs one more win to defend her points.

Singles – First Round Monica Niculescu def. Jarmila Gajdosova 6-1 4-6 6-4

It appears this will drop Jarmila Gajdosova out of the Top Forty. Monica Niculescu is probably one win away from the Top Thirty.

Singles – First Round Christina McHale def. (LL) Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 7-5

Christina McHale doesn’t move yet, but one more win could take her to around #36.

Singles – First Round Klara Zakopalova def. (WC) Alize Cornet 6-3 6-1

One more win would return Klara Zakopalova to the Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round (Q) Bethanie Mattek-Sands def. (Q) Kristina Barrois 7-6(7-3) 6-2

Bethanie Mattek-Sands still needs two more wins to defend her points, but she is looking good so far.

Singles – Second Round: (1) Maria Sharapova def. Chanelle Scheepers 6-3 6-1

A nice result for Maria Sharapova, considering that she had to pull out of Fed Cup with an injury. Injured or not, she will be rising to #2 this week. She leaves Chanelle Scheepers still below #40.

Singles – Second Round: (6) Julia Goerges def. Petra Cetkovska 6-1 6-4

Julia Goerges hasn’t clinched the #20 ranking yet, but it’s looking pretty likely. Petra Cetkovska will be no better than #30.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Kondratieva/Lefevre 6-4 4-6 10-6 (Match TB)

And to think this was an event where Huber/Raymond should have been able to cruise to the title — there was hardly any competition.

Doubles – First Round: Kichenok/Kichenok def. (3) Gajdosova/Mattek-Sands 6-2 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Groenefeld/Martic def. Bogdan/Marosi 3-6 6-1 10-7 (Match TB)
