We talked in our preview about how weak the qualifying draw is here. So perhaps it’s not surprise that three of the top four seeds made the main draw: #1 Chan Kai-Chen, #3 Hsieh Su-Wei, and #4 Varatchaya Wongteanchai all won in straight sets. But our fourth qualifier was unseeded even in this weak draw: Zhou Yi-Miao upset #6 Sacha Jones 6-2 in the third.

Interesting to note that all our qualifiers are from the Pacific Rim.

Singles – First Round: (7) Sorana Cirstea def. Erika Sema 6-2 6-2

No points yet for Sorana Cirstea, but two more wins would put her on the verge of the Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: Anastasia Rodionova def. Iryna Bremond 6-4 6-0

This won’t help Anastasia Rodionova much, but it pretty well guarantees that she will stay Top Hundred.

Doubles – First Round: Akita/Rottmann def. Hsu/Webley-Smith 3-6 6-2 11-9 (Match TB)

The doubles field here is incredibly weak. These two teams both have combined rankings below #400 — but both have direct entry!

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
