Pattaya City

Singles – First Round: (1) Vera Zvonareva def. (Q) Varatchaya Wongteanchai 6-2 7-5

A reasonably efficient start for Vera Zvonareva, but she needs a final to make any real difference to her point total.

Singles – First Round: Anne Keothavong def. (2) Dominika Cibulkova 6-4 6-1

Dominika Cibulkova had to hurry here from Fed Cup; one suspects jet lag affected her results. Whatever the explanation, this costs her some points, and at least one ranking spot.

Singles – First Round: (3) Daniela Hantuchova def. Nungnadda Wannasuk (WC) 6-2 6-0

No signs of jet lag for defending champion Daniela Hantuchova. Of course, she was facing a very strong opponent.

Singles – First Round: (4) Maria Kirilenko def. Casey Dellacqua 4-6 7-6(8-6) 6-3

Maybe it’s just as well Maria Kirilenko missed Fed Cup; she just barely had enough energy to survive as it is! And she needs one more win to start earning points.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Hsieh Su-Wei def. (5) Zheng Jie 6-3 6-2

Zheng Jie loses her chance to hit the Top Thirty; she will be between #33 and #35.

Singles – First Round: Tamarine Tanasugarn def. (6) Galina Voskoboeva 6-3 4-2 retired (Illness)

This makes you wonder a little bit about whether someone slipped a little something into Galina Voskoboeva’s lunch — after all, it let Thailand’s top player survive. No, we aren’t really suggesting that, but it is convenient for the locals. And tough for Voskoboeva, who will lose at least two rankings spots.

Singles – First Round: (8) Vania King def. Heather Watson 6-4 6-2

Vania King will probably gain a spot or two, but is still about 125 points away from the Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Chang Kai-Chen def. Eleni Daniilidou 7-5 6-1

This will very likely put Chang Kai-Chen in the Top Hundred. One more win would clinch it.

Singles – First Round: Alla Kudryavtseva def. (Q) Zhou Yi-Miao 6-1 7-5

Alla Kudryavtseva assures that she will stay Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: Misaki Doi def. (WC) Noppawan Lertcheewakarn 6-1 6-3

Misaki Doi will rise to around #125.

Singles – First Round: Urszula Radwanska def. Anastasia Pivovarova 6-4 6-1

One more win would probably take Urszula Radwanska above #80.

Singles – First Round: Kimiko Date-Krumm def. (WC) Nicha Lertpitaksinchai 6-1 6-1

Kimiko Date-Krumm defends her points and should stay above #80.

Singles – First Round: Akgul Amanmuradova def. Laura Robson 5-2 retired (Back Injury)

Akgul Amanmuradova is another who will likely hit the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: Sania Mirza def. Ayumi Morita 3-6 6-1 6-2

Sania Mirza won’t quite hit the Top Hundred yet, but at least she seems to be getting her game together.
