A week ago Bernard Tomic was the pride of Australia after his winning exploits at Melbourne Park. Now he is in trouble with the Queensland Police after being stopped twice in as many hours driving his high-powered $150,000 BMW M3 near his home in Surfers Paradise.
The 19 year-old Tomic and his girlfriend Donay Meijer were initially pulled over by officers in the Broadbeach precinct later followed to his home by a siren-blaring patrol car after allegedly refusing a direction to pull over.
Local police Chief Inspector Glenn Allen said two traffic infringement notices had been issued to Tomic who in turn maintained his innocence.
“I don’t know what’s wrong, it’s like I killed somebody,” said the world’s 38th ranked player and leading male teenager. “They’ve given me three tickets and one officer feels like he wants to get me and it’s not a good feeling. It’s all happened on Australia Day when I am trying to have fun with my mates.”
Late last year Tomic maintained he was harassed by local police officers while driving on P (probationary) plates. He is now allowed to drive his car on a special exemption that permits travel to and from training and other activities directly related to his tennis.
“I was on a visit doing my stuff and enjoying my day and I had my things all planned,” continued Tomic. “Someone doesn’t like that and wants to stop that.”
Later a spokesman for Tomic said the player’s legal representative was considering a making complaint to the Crime and Misconduct Commission or the Ethical Standards Command.
Later Inspector Allen is understood to have had a lengthy conversation with Tomic’s father and coach John who in turn accused the police of adopting ‘un-Australian actions.’
Inspector Allen said: “They’re making a determination about whether they wish to make a complaint and we’ll leave that up to them.”
