Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) Petra Kvitova def. Sara Errani 6-4 6-4
It really does seem as if everyone around here is afraid of taking the #1 ranking. Caroline Wozniacki lost to a hobbled Kim Clijsters. Victoria Azarenka struggled at the start of her match with Agnieszka Radwanska. And Petra Kvitova struggled at the start of the second set of this, going down an early break. But she quickly pulled things together and managed to finish in straight sets. Which puts her back ahead of Azarenka in the contest for #1. But it still all depends on who lasts longest.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) Maria Sharapova def. Ekaterina Makarova 6-2 6-3
At least one of our contenders for #1 managed to be efficient. Maria Sharapova is still #4 in the rankings, but she has her fate in her own hands. Since she faces Kvitova in the semifinal, she will be #1 if she can win the title. If she loses to Kvitova, though, she stays #4. Win her semi but lose the final and she will be at least #3. Ekaterina Makarova, although she wasn’t very competitive here, scored the best result of her career and finds herself just below the Top Forty.
