Caroline Wozniacki held her composure and looked wisely into the future after losing her WTA No. 1 ranking after a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) quarter-final to Kim Clijsters at the Australian Open.
The 21-year-old Dane who spent 67 week atop the table and finished on the leading place at the end of the 2010 and 2011 seasons, took her medicine with smiling good grace.
“To be honest, I don’t really think about it,” she said of the ranking demotion. “I’ve been there for a long time already. At the end of the year we will see who played the best. We are just in January. In the end of the year you see who has played the best, most consistently all year round. I’ll get it back eventually, so I’m not worried.”
The new top player will come from Czech Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova, third seed Victoria Azarenka or Maria Sharapova, according to WTA calculations.
Wozniacki could only smile when she gets written off just because she has yet to win a major title after holding the top spot. “I start laughing every time because the media talks to me like I’m finishing my career and I only have one year left and time is running out.
“The fact is I still have quite a few good years in front of me. I still improve: I still have a number of Australians and a number of US Opens and Wimbledons and French Opens left.
“I’ll definitely do my best and try to win one or even more Grand Slams. At the end of the day, you can just do your best. You can’t do anything more than that.
“If your best is good enough, that’s great. If not, then it’s just too good from the other person. I will come back not only once but more times.”
