Mats Wilander, three times Australian Open champion, is reported to be comfortable and responding to treatment after being rushed to a Melbourne hospital following a freak fall in his hotel room on the eve of the 2012’s initial Grand Slam.
Wilander, aged 47 and contracted to work for Eurosport television at Melbourne Park, fell in the bathroom and lacerated kidney that caused internal bleeding. On Monday he required a blood transfusion of two liters.
A statement released earlier today said: “Late on Saturday evening Mats sustained a fall in his apartment which caused him to be taken to a local hospital in Melbourne.
“He sustained a laceration to one of his kidneys. This caused internal bleeding. The bleeding has ceased as of 7:00 am this morning. He will be out of commission for a while.
“We will keep you updated on his condition if things change. Thanks for everyone’s concerns and enjoy the Open!”
Wilander, who won $8 million and more in endorsements during a 15 years professional career he brought to an end in now in 1996, lives on an 81-acre estate in Sun Valley, Idaho. He coached former world no.1 Marat Safin, Tatiana Golovin and Paul-Henri Mathieu and served as Sweden’s Davis Cup captain.
