Caroline Wozniacki has been reassured by the results of an MRI scan that there is no serious damage to her left wrist and the women’s world no.1 can start her Australian Open campaign with no question marks over her fitness.
Wozniacki was concerned she might have suffered some long lasting damage after continuing with the injury during her Apia International defeat against Agnieszka Radwanska and a combination of pain and worry saw the 21 year-old disintegrate into tears in the final set.
The player who has lead the world rankings since last February but is still looking for her first Grand Slam title feared the worst as she left Sydney’s Homebush Stadium but WTA spokesman Eloise Tyson reported the extensive examinations and scans to the wrist revealed “no major damage.”
Wozniacki will continue to rest the joint and is unlikely to undertake any strenuous practice sessions before playing her first round match against Australia’s Anastasia Rodonova. Tyson said: “The wrist is inflamed, and she will continue to have it monitored and it’s hopeful she will play the Australian Open.”
The draw for the year’s initial Grand Slam was not overly kind to Wozniacki and she could face French Open champion Li Na in the quarter-finals. Defending champion Kim Clijsters, third seed Victoria Azarenka and the dangerous elder Radwanska sister are also in her half of the women’s singles draw.
Meanwhile John McEnroe revealed he is certain Wozniacki wants to be unseated from the no.1 spot and so be allowed without the pressure of justifying the ranking in each major.
McEnroe, in Melbourne to commentate for Fox Sports throughout the Australian Open, is insistent Wozniacki’s confidence was not high even before she suffered the injury.
“I think the pressure’s gotten to Caroline, because people have been a little bit hard of her,” said McEnroe. “Some it’s justified but she’s almost become the poster girl for what’s wrong with the rankings. The simple reason is she has been no.1 is because she plays more tournaments.
“I’m sure she’s thinking if she could just win one title, she’d shut a lot of people up, but right now her game just hasn’t progressed. I would have thought that by now she would have had maybe a little bit more weaponry, and slightly more comfort level coming to net.”
